Oil dripping from carburettor was created by ELCouz
Hi,

I have a GPZ750 1982 (KZ750-R1). Every time i stop the bike and put it on it's side stand. I have drips from the Carb #1 off engine oil (dripping from the lowest part of the carb.... the drain plug). Drip eventually stop after few drops put always leave an oil spot on the tarmac.

What in hell could this oil come from?

Best regards,
laurent

Is it coming from the crank vent?
Are running a stock air box?
The only path for oil to the carb is the crank vent system.
Is the air box oily?
Have you checked the oil level to make you are not over filled.
If all of those question are negative, are you sure that it's oil and not gas?

All good things to check. Also check to see if the valve cover gasket is leaking at the back. Oil may be running down the engine to the carb boot then on to the carb.

thanks for the help guys!

Is it coming from the crank vent?

There's some oil sludge around the breather tube (connected to the vent)

Are running a stock air box?

Yes everything is stock except the pipe.

Is the air box oily?

yes i've cleaned it.

Have you checked the oil level to make you are not over filled.

I'm 1/16 over the glass sight but somebody say in this forum if you are a little bit over its no big deal.

All good things to check. Also check to see if the valve cover gasket is leaking at the back. Oil may be running down the engine to the carb boot then on to the carb.

Everything is clean around the valve cover gasket...

Is there a filter inside the crankcase breather compartment (bulge with the screw)?

Have a nice day!

OK, I'm trying to figure out a way to be positive that it is or is not coming from the breather through the air filter box. If you were to wipe the carb clean and air filter box clean how far could you ride before this problem would occur again, or does it occur every time you use the side stand even immediately after cleaning the airbox? I'm thinking that if you clean the carb exterior really well and dust it with flour or something like that you should be able to see if the oil is coming from the airbox side or engine side of the carb or if it is coming from a seal where a shaft penetrates the carb body or something like that. Once you figure out how the oil is coming out of the carb you may be able to find the source easier. Another thought is to clean the carb & airbox really well and disconnect the breather tube where it enters the airbox. In that case, if the oil still drips from the carb it can't be coming from the breather. The risk is if the breather is spitting a lot of oil, the back of the engine may get nasty, but at least you'll know for sure where the oil is coming from. Ed

All goo info so far... follow the oil trail.

Oil should be at half the height of the glass, not over/@ the top, that IS too much, and can blow out of the breather.

you are right... I've removed nearly a pint of oil to make the oil level between the 2 marks.

EDIT: it is very hard to check the level while keeping the 500 pounds bike centered on its wheel :S ... previous owner broke the center stand frame attachment.

Now no more oil leaks.

Can somebody explain me how does it work. I mean how so little amount overfill can make the oil spit from the breather and increase the overall oil pressure?
