My bike sat for 9 years and the pipes are full of nuts, nesting material, etc. I pulled them off the bike and have a few questions:

1.) There appears to be a bunch of silver steel woool material at the end of the pipe. Do the stock mufflers have packing or did the animals move it in?

2.) I'm wondering if I can get to it by drilling out the rivets in the end cap. Has anyone done that and if so, can I just replace the rivets?

Thanks
Nick

I'll compare the one muffler I was looking at to the other once I separate it from the head pipes, but it may take awhile as its on there pretty good.

Has anyone drilled the endcap out of one of these mufflers?
Both stock mufflers are filled with nuts, etc. from sitting so long. I've taken a bunch of stuff out already, but I figure I can get to the rest of it by taking the endcap off. I drilled out the rivets but its not budging.

Take a hammer and small punch and drive the rivets out, then get some sheet metal screws, turning them in where the rivets were.

Use a vice grip and grab the screws as a pulling place. Before trying to remove the end caps, spray the joints with PB-Blaster or other penetating oil for a few days.

Use a slide-hammer to pop them out.....and take some measurments for me ....I need a pair of those end caps.

I either have to make some or find a pair, the previous owner removed them and it sounds like junk w/out them (IMO). I posted on here a couple times looking , but havent come up with a pair yet

It took awhile this weekend, but I got them off. I used sheet metal screws with a slide hammer to start it. Then once I got it separated, I used a l-hook that came with my slide hammer in each of the rivet holes and worked it off.

I'll measure it up and trace one of the caps and post back.
Thanks

I just cleaned out all the nestinng and nuts, etc. out of the pipes. Whatever animals were living in there had a nice thing going for awhile. Anyways, I put the caps back on tonight with rivets. Thanks again for the help.

Rodents love to put all kinds of food for the future in what they consider a safe place.

Mice will build nests inside engine compartments of seldom driven cars, and chew up motorcycle seats stored away.

Attached are the specs for my muffler caps in PDF format. I traced the cap and included some measurements.
