Timing Dyna s Electronic Ignition was created by The Shepherd
I just installed the dyna s Elec Ign on my 1976 kz900,,,,not sure if I'm using the correct mark,,,,attached is picture of marks,,,3rd picture is when the spark plug fires while holding advance fully advanced (as per dyna instructions),,,,just added 4th picture to show when plug fires without holding advance. Picture 1 is the first marks that come up and picture 2 is the marks that follow,,,,, Dyna instructions read::::1) to time the engine statically, connect a 12 volt test light (I used the spark plug attached to plug wire and watched for spark,,,is that OK???)from the junction of the black coil wires to ground (engine case) 2) while holding the rotor in the fully advanced position,, clockwise,,, slowly rotate engine forward until test light turns on,,,(when the plug fires,,is the way I did It) The right hand advance mark for cylinder 1-4 should align with the fixed mark on the engine case. They say that the advance timing mark is approximately 1/2 inch to the right of the F marks on the advance assembly......Did I used the right mark in picture 3 while holding advance fully advanced?????Thanks,,,Pat

#3 image is the correct advance timing mark they are speaking of....

We all (most of us anyways:S ) had some confusion regarding those instructions which led to the write up notes I recorded during my installation of the Dyna EI in a KZ900-A4.

NOTE: Don't get hung up on the slotting of the plate screws for it most likely is due to different advancer units...

Either way the procedure works for static and timing light alignments....

Hope it helps out...

No problemo...

As you can see in the tut... Screw that "hold the advancer" crapola... follow the info and it will static & dynamic tune correctly....

When all done, in using a timing light, @ idle it should fall on "F" mark & @ 2500-3000rpm it should align with your advance marks (image 3)... check both 1/2 & 3/4 combos in moving your timing light inductive clamp on the spark plug wires....

Let us know how it comes out for you, especially regarding if you as well needed to slot the plate elongated holes... Several of us have had to do so...

No big deal really but interesting the same...

Anyone ever try to figure out what the best advance is for max power and what the best is for economy cruising?

I have noticed that most Kawasaki engines up to 1978 go from 10*@ 1000Rpm to 40*@3400Rpm. On engines starting with the 78 Z1R the timing changed to 20*@1000 To the 40*@3400Rpm. I imagine this will give you more idle torque but loss of fuel economy during city riding.

I was able to get the timing correct as in picture #3 without the need to make the slot longer,,,,it was close,,, and I think that is what made me question the mark,,,,,,,,
Thanks again,,,,,pat

There's not a lot of alignment in the individual sensors themselves so if you're slightly off the mark as in image 3, then by all means elongate the slots another 3/16ths or so.

Give your self some room and get that alignment mark dead nuts on the marks.... Then if you have to get a minor adjustment do so on the individual sensors them selves during the dynamic alignments...

Take your time, it will be worth it... trust us on this one, dial her in to perfection and you'll feel the difference for optimum performance... ;)
