popping in to Neutral while shifting was created by cromick
I have a 82 650 CSR and sometimes it'll pop into Neutral when I'm shifting up from 1st to 2nd. Anybody else have that problem or know if I might be just not kicking it up hard enough?

I've have the same motorcycle and had this happen, but very rarely - probably once in 5,000 miles.

Just be sure your shift is very deliberate and positive. These bikes shift so easily that it is easy to just nudge the lever with your left foot instead of making a positive motion. If your technique is right, and it still does this, then someting else may be taking place, which someone else will have to chime in with what it is.

I had a Honda 919 that would do this alot and my Hyosung does it. I just made sure I shifted up real hard.

if you have aftermarket pipes and free-flow air cleaner, your bike will pop out the exhaust. richen your idle mixture screws and it will stop.

it is a worn part in the shift mechanism imo....mine all do it cause of my wheight-big feet-and modified shift linkage....it is not gonna do much in the short term and will just be annoying..i'm sure it is not so great for the valves to get big dose often but oh well, mine seems to not care....i have to be positive in my shifts when under a load or when haulling ass away from a stop as i go up through the gears......it can be fixed but is a lot of work and may just reappear imo.....most old kz's have a false nuetral between second and third anyways and that is often where the missed shift occurs as you leave a dead stop...imo...

i would just shift harder with the left toes....

Thanks guys. I often times think that I just need to kick that up with a little more emphasis, and when I do consciously think to do that, I don't have the problem. It does sometimes, also, go into neutral as I'm downshifting to first, although that hasn't happened with much frequency as the other issue.

how can engine "popping" have anything to do with loose shift linkage? i'm guessing that your bike is popping out the exhaust. if so it will do so when you let off the gas with the bike in gear too. richen your idle mix on each carb until the problem stops. simple....

I didn't mean popping in the literal, noisy sense. I meant it as in "goes into unexpectedly". Like you "pop in" to someone's house.

Is your shift lever tight on the shift shaft? This can come to be slightly loose causing a further travel of the toe to get the correct travel of the shift shaft. The splines here can get pretty loose.
