Won't go in gear

The bike clicks down in first but the gears seem to never engage. The bike rolls as if in nuetral. What could be the problem and what should I be checking? Thanks.

Among other possibilities, might be:

Counter-shaft sprocket having come loose;

Clutch cable needs adjustment;

Clutch push rod needs adjustment;

Clutch cable end not correctly inserted at sprocket cover.

With bike rolling forward, will it shift into second gear?

I have to change the plugs before I can start it but as of now it will not go into second rolling. It seems to be external as suggested and I hope it is not internal. I thought about the sprocket coming off I checked from the back and it seemed like it was stiil in place. I didnt have any tools on me to take any covers off. I will be able to check your suggestions in more detail later on.

The bike was riding fine my friend rode to work called me in the morning saying the bike wouldn't start. When I got there I tried to push start the bike then noticed it would't go in gear. So to me it has to be something minor that I just haven't been able to check yet.

U have to have a firm foot to get an old KZ to go into gear when it isnt running and it is a rear job to get it to upshift when not running.Be sure u have clutch adjusted properly and use firm pressure to see if u can get it into first.bj

The countersprocket nut came off and the sprocket slid off the splines. The one and only possibility. Also you can't shift into second until the engine is turning, so don't worry about that just yet.

yeah i have checked numerous kz650's and none will go into 2nd gear if the bike is not running..
first and neutral will engage.. but 2nd... never worked for me with the bike off.. rolling doesnt help

Sometimes the shifter can bind in the case hole and prevent it from clicking down that extra half inch required to get into the gear. Feels like it should be going into the gear, but its just not quite far enough.

You can shift the bike into second from a standstill, but only with the shifter cover off, and by spinning the output shaft by hand with no sprocket/chain on there... so who cares. :laugh:

I checked in detail today and found that the sprocket and shaft were stripping.
I hope the shaft isn't stripped so bad that it needs repaced. I'm gonna try tommorrow.
