Can someone please tell me the correct way to remove the spark advancer bolt on a KZ1000? I'm installing a Dyna S ignition, & saw that this bolt has two different size hexes on it and I just want to make sure I remove it the correct way to avoid damage

Hold the larger one with a box wrench to prevent it from turning while loosening the smaller one.

i tried to do this, but after i put a wrench on the larger one, there's not enough of the top nut exposed to get a good bite on it. have to find some slim wrenches i guess?

Sometimes an air impact wrench (maybe electric impact wrench) will loosen and remove the bolt from end of crankshaft without needing to hold the 17mm nut.

The bolt turns counter-clockwise to loosen.

Good Fortune! :)

Thanks I'll keep that in mind for sure - I think I'll run over to Sears or somewhere like that today, & see if they have some slim profile box wrenches. There was just absolutely no way for me to fit two box wrenches, or a box wrench & socket on there, I would just end up stripping the hex on the bolt. I'm kind of puzzled & feeling stupid because it seems like everybody else has installed this ignition, and nobody ever mentions running into this problem!

Could also put bike in gear and apply rear brake to hold crankshaft in position while turning out the bolt.

Good Fortune! :)

Excellent! That was my initial thought, but when I tried that the first time I must not have been putting enough mustard on the brake because the bike was wanting to roll across the garage floor as I was trying to turn the bolt. It was on there REALLY tight, but I got it. Thanks for the help!

I used the 17mm open end wrench in my old factory tool bag. It is as you described slimmer than the standard style wrench. I had the same problem as you described but had forgotten.
