'79 KZ1000 engine was created by beachbum
I have got a 1977 and 1978 kz1000 currently. I picked them up from a friend who was moving and needed them out of his old house. The '77 seems like it will be a jewel after some elbow grease. On the '78 however I tried to move the kick start, just to see if I could hear movement inside; but, no movement whatsoever. I'm afraid that the years of it sitting outside have done it in. Haven't had a chance yet to pop it open and see what's up with it. My initial reaction is thinking that it is siezed.

I have found a listing on CL for a '79 KZ1000 engine with carbs and exhaust. Are the odds good for this engine fitting on the '78 frame?

Ok now that I have that cleared up, I am inexperienced at the inner workings of the motor. Which parts must I look at to get a vibe on the condition of the motor? I have the Clymer manual, so I can reference that when I get suggestions.

Seems like I remember seeing a thread or two recently about freeing a seized engine. Give the "search forum" box a try.

Sweet, i'll take a looksie. I figured we'd tinker with the seized one for grins if we fixed it then that would be a great spare!

I'd pull the sparkplugs, spray n either PB Blaster or marvel mystery oil, reinstall the plugs and give it week to have the penetating oil work.

Then again with the plugs out carefully see if the engine will turn using the 17mm "Nut" on the end of the crank.

Don't use the bolt holding the mechanical ignition advancer to the end of the crank as one member here some time ago broke the bolt off inside the crankshaft or sheared off the roll pin.

Bought the engine! I'll post pictures of it later on. I think it will work out nicely.

Ok, so kind of did an impulse buy today. I was walking around harbor freight and this engine stand was on sale.

Now that I have it, I'm starting to scratch my head on how to attach the motor to it safely. Anyone use a stand similar to this with the 4 arms on it to bolt into?
