mtc 1197 cc ring gap? was created by boogy699
I am trying to figure out my ring gap on my total seal piston rings on an 1197cc kit. They are not the gapless rings, but are the regular ones. It says to find the clearance i multiply my bore times .0035 and I'm not sure what that means. Can anyone help?

What is the bore diameter for your 1197cc motor?

If your kit uses 76mm pistons, then 76mmx0.0035=0.266mm or 0.010".

EDIT: I think that's about right.

I think my 750 twin pistons are a little over 3" diameter and nominal end gap is about .014" ballpark. Ergo, .010" should be about right for a four that totals 1200cc snce that would be same piston size as a 600cc twin (pistons a shade smaller than mine).

a good rule to remember if they don't specify is .003-.004" ring gap per inch of bore so a 3" inch bore piston would be .009" to .012"

An 1197 kit has a 76mm bore or (2.992 inch), just under three inches.
Multiply 2.992 X .0035 = .010472".
This is your desired end to end clearance with the ring evenly in the bore and down 1/4" to 1/2".
Since it is unlikely that you have a feeler gauge that is .010472, I would go with .011".

X2 .
measured at the smallest point of the bore that the rings will travel, if the bore is not new.
