Stupid Oil Leaks... was created by beefsquasher
Just put my 1075 back together. New gaskets, wiseco head gasket, new copper washers for the end stud, permatex #2 sealant on the base gasket, copper spray on the stud tops and washers.

Leaks oil at the base gasket at the front near the cam chain tunnel, and at the base gasket at the left front stud.

Rode 80 miles, re-torque to 38 ft-lb (have APE studs and top nuts).

Still leaks.

Rode another 100, re-torque to 40 ft-lbs.

Still leaks.

Please tell me I don't have to do it over!

Runs great, by the way.

Did you replace all the O rings at the base gasket area? Mine has two that seal the oil flow up to the head.

Was the head/cylinder flanges really scraped clean and smooth?

Not sure what "permatex #2" is, I would only use something like 3-bond on a base gasket which is guaranteed to never leak. It's designed to seal case halves.

"Please tell me I don't have to do it over!"....

Unfortunately, yes you do if you want it leak free... Sorry but don't see another way around it...

What cylinder base gasket was used?

And your 100% positive this is where the leak is coming from versus further up top and leaking down to this point... I know, I know, not trying to insult but clean oil is a bitch at times and can be deceiving...

Trick I learned of Plum on my gaskets, Permatex Copper spray on paper gaskets... So far, No leaky so good to go... The copper spray will stick and require mild scrapping in high temp areas such as front time chain over exhaust ports...

Had been spray using on valve cover gasket as well, trying the RTV gasket this time, no leaks... Want to see if sticks less...

Sorry but yeah, we think you already know the answer here...

Good luck,

The base gasket I got in the Athena rebuild set disintegrated really quickly after my rebuild. There are some bad gaskets out there. On the second try, i got gsket material from Auto Zone and made my own. Worked perfectly.

Base gasket was Vesrah. Clearly, I'm an idiot in thinking it would be OK. I already ordered an OEM base gasket.

And the head gasket is leaking too. Is it OK to use the copper spray on the head gasket as well?

I didn't fill the cam chain o-ring tunnel with silicone or anything b/c i was using a one-piece head gasket. Bad idea?

I have also head of shaving down the rubber blocks that hold the cam chain idlers in place when using a one piece gasket b/c they don't have quite as much gap to take up. Good idea?

By the way, runs great. And I mean GREAT.

I used copper spray on my head gasket to try to keep it from seeping oil. The 750 twins do seep oil along the front middle edge of the head gasket and I don't think anything will stop it.

My head has three 10mm bolts that go upward into the head to reduce head leakage, not sure if yours does. Those have to be torqued to spec or it will leak like a mutha.

I filled in the tunnel with silicone when I rebuilt my motor. That is what was recommended to me when using a one piece head gasket. I installed the head gasket dry. I have 500 miles on the motor now, and no leaks.

I read on Redline Cycles website that they suggest shaving down the rubber blocks on the cam chain roller shafts. I didn't do this and have had no leaks so far.
