1977 kz650 oil change question was created by kz.chris
Do I need to remove the fuel tank to get to the oil filter?
If so, is the tank hinged or do i need to remove it completely?

Thanks,

Chris

Is this a trick question? :P Your oil drain plug and oil filter are down under the bike on the oil pan. Place bike on center stand for this entire operation. Front plug is oil drain, drain that first. Re-install plug snugly. (aluminum strips easy, careful) Rear plug holds oil filter cover (about 4" or so in diameter) loosen this plug and then spin off slowly (more oil will come out) entire cover. Pull old oil filter off and replace "O" rings (If included with filter) Install new filter with spring under filter and basket under spring. Lightly coat "O" rings with oil and re-install cover and snug up. Add three quarts oil of your choice. Oil fill is on right side (sitting on bike) on top of clutch cover. Make sure to re-install oil fill cover before starting bike other wise oil will fly everywhere! Shut bike off and recheck level, you will add about another 1/2 quart or so to upper fill line. This level window is down below on clutch cover. And that's it! B)

Thanks a lot!

I guess that would be the air filter under the gas tank then  . How do I get to that? I can get to half of it under the seat but the fuel tank is in way if i want to remove the filter completely.

Thanks!

All you have to do is open the seat on the hinges and lift the rear of the fuel tank to get the air filter cover off. No need to unhook the petcock or lift the tank completely.

In addition to the tons of information around here, a factory shop manual is invaluable.

If you are mistaking the canister looking thing on the top of the motor under the carbs for an oil filter this would be incorrect. As stated earlier the oil filter is under the motor. The canister looking thing is a breather for the crankcase. Hope this helps.
