Detuned KZ1000P's was created by northrider
I have purchased a 93 kz1000p, the bike runs good but I am the kind of guy that is always trying to make something a little better. I had heard the company detuned the kz1000p for safety reasons (is this true ?) and if it is true is there a way to fix this? How did they de-tune it?

The only difference in the engine (not sure about the carbs) is in the camshafts. The Police model used the same as the KZ1000-K and -M models aka the LTD and CSR. Compared to the J-model they have less peak horsepower (92@8000rpm vs 102@8500rpm) and less peak torque (8.7kg-m @ 7000rpm vs 9.3 kg-m @ 7000rpm).
As these are all more set up for cruising, I suspect that although max torque is lower, it kicks in at lower rpm's. At least, I'd hope so since otherwise they'd throw away performance. And that would just be silly.;)

The Police supplement for the KZ1000/1100 manual. I have it somewhere, but would need to do a search expedition since I haven't used it for a long time. About the only useful information in there is the wiring diagram. Tonight I'll try to find it and check the info.

This information is provided in the respective Kawasaki OE service manuals for each model bike. Zthou1977 is right, The K, M, P, bikes were set up for longer and more efficient cruising with lower end torque.

I was hoping that they (kawasaki) had possibly just necked down the exhaust pipes a little, say the opposite of a good set of headers. Then the cure would be an easy fix, a good set of headers! But I suppose the cam that is in the thing may give it a longer range, it needs all the range it can get. It keeps up with any v-twin on the road anyway.
Since I am the third owner ( chp, some other guy then me) I dont have a manual for the bike. But I did find a couple of wiring diagrams online and they really saved my ass. If it's a lot of trouble Zthou, dont bother looking for the manual. the bike runs great for this summer and all my mod's are going to take place this winter in the garage. All I have done so far is one: lexxan windshield, two: metalflake black paint job, three: rear seat that folds up for cargo and a back-rest.
this winter: new swing arm-fat rear wheel, four into one.

Northrider,
That Police supplement has gone into hiding, couldn't find it anywhere. But just dropping in a set of J-cams should give you quite a bit more top-end.
BTW: what kind of fuel mileage are you getting? Mine does about 17 km/liter, but I am hoping this will improve after the overhaul I am doing.

I think its running about 40+ mpg, which is ok. they really should have engineered more volume in that tank though.

It may be the wat that the different departments ordered them, but when we did machine work for Glendale, Ca. PD, the head mechanic is a racing crew chief and he said the carbs had the slides drilled so they wouldn't open all the way. They didn't want these guys getting into chases with these bikes that had all that crap bolted on them.

We did a lot of 1076 kits for them and the CHP.

Follow the link to a KZ1000 Police Motorcycle forum that has all the info you might want about your COP bike. Just ask and one of these guys will probably have the answer. They are as good as the guys on this forum. Heck they ride KZ's too.:woohoo:
