Cam chain tensioner z550 b2 was created by ivopeters
Hi, I'm new on this forum and I have a question about a cam chain tensioner of a z550 b2.
My tensioner has broken and I'm trying to find a new one, but I can't find it anywhere.
Does anybody know if there are other models which are using the same tensioner so I can replace mine?
Thanks,
Ivo

Hey Ivo,
It seems like a lot of these tensioners break. My thought is that this is at least partly Kawasaki's fault. The tensioner cap is 17mm nut, but if you don't look in the table to see how tight this nut should be tightened you normally just break the tensioner.
If you get your hands on a good one always be very careful when tightening this nut!
I never really tried, but it seems to me that the Suzuki cam chain tensioners of the early 80's look very very similar. Perhaps a Suzuki tensioner works on kz550? Or perhaps you can modify a Suzuki tensioner to make it work? Maybe someone here knows something about it.

I cross referenced an 81 KZ 550 A2. It gave me an 85 bike count, meaning that 85 other Kawasaki models use a cam chain tensioner compatible with yours. The software didn't list any B models, but that was likely just a glitch or some missed info. The models include 550 to 84, ZL 600, ZX 600 (NINJA) from 85-96, KZ 1000 81-97, some ZN and ZX 1100'S.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

According to the Kawasaki parts fiche, the same tensioner was used on a lot of bikes including ZX600, ZX1100, KZ1000 police models for about 20 years running. Should be very readilly available.
