What is the original sprockets sizes on a 78 KZ1000. I want to get less rpm at hiway speeds. I now turn a touch over 4k at 65mph.. Should I go larger in front or smaller in back??

I wouldn't touch it you will gain nothing and loose everything if. At 4000 you are at the first peek on the torque curve and you are on the flat spot of the fuel consumption curve. But if you drop RPM even by 500 revs you will loose 10Hp and about 2 Lb/Ft of torque. This at no gain in fuel economy.

The diagrams at Kawasaki.com will have the sprocket sizes, as well as other info for your bike... the cross-reference is a handy feature... for future reference.

In 1978 there were 3 different KZ1000s, Z1R, LTD & standard model. They all had different final drive ratios. Have to have more info than 78 KZ1000 to answer your question.

15 front and 33 rear. For the KZ1000.

I am sure power or fuel does not matter to you.

Just lowering RPM's

Put a 16 tooth countershaft on the front. They are on ebay alot. If your chain is tight you might have to add a link.

OH I forgot to say it was a LTD model, I know when I'm running 80mph it don't take much to go over a ton. I just always seem to try to get another around 70mph.

If you must, than I do agree. I would go to a 16T front. This way you wont have to change the chain and you will go from a 2.2:1 ratio to a 2.06:1 ratio. That is significant.
