Best way to unstick a piston ring? was created by Jodyb17
The middle ring on one of my pistons does not turn freely like all the others. I have tried PB blaster, but the thing is stuck good.

Is it okay to heat the piston a bit? Would that even help?

I thought about using a razor blade at the ring gap, but I don't want to score up my piston.

Would try soaking it for a day or so in 50-50 mix of ATF and acetone.

if it is stuck that bad, your prob going to need to replace the rings any way, not sure if its still standard bore or not, but I dont think it will ever seal like it should.

ehhh, maybe carefully take the ring off and gently scrape the carbon out of the ring seat with a small screwdriver....then put the ring back in...or get new rings, they are pretty expensive though.

I like the ATF/Acetone idea too, im gonna try that. atf has alot of detergent in it.

has the ring land collaspsed if so then you will need a new piston as well.or is it just rusted into place.either way you will at least need new rings as the rusted ones will have lost strength as well as tension.

yes that is called the ring land.

Go ahead and bust it, then use it as a ring groove cleaner to scrape the old carbon out so your "NEW" rings will fit. Be carefull not to gouge the metal, and check the ring to ring land fit as well as end gap in the bore after honing.
