kz650 csr
21 May 2010 12:08
I recently bought a 1983 KZ650 CSR and was wondering if anyone knows the gas tank capacity and mpg on this model, and how many gallons are left once I switch over to reserve. Thanks!

Howdy. Neato. You have the best CSR.
Do you have the owner's manual for the bike? Just in case... it might be located in a pull-down document holder on the underside of the seat.
The fuel tank capacity is 3.2 gallons.
Switching to Reserve gets you the last 0.8 gallons.
The low-fuel warning light should come on when the fuel level is somewhere less than 1 gallon.

JMKZHI is right on with his figures.
I have a 1982 KZ650 CSR. My low fuel warning light first starts to wink anywhere from 90 to 105 miles. Then about 10 miles further the warning light stays on constantly. Then the bike will not be able to keep running until the reserve lever is switched, roughly from 115 to 130 miles. After that, it will completely run out of gas from about 150 to 170 miles. (I have tested this by carrying a gas container with me).
Gas mileage with BS32 carbs and stock gearing runs from 45 to 55, depending on the speed, riding habits, length of trip, etc. Mine routinely gets 50+ MPG.
Good luck and come back with any questions.

Thanks guys for your info. Been having a lot of fun with this bike since I bought it (Friday before Mother's Day). Looks like the weather's gonna be great for the next few days, so I plan on putting more miles. Thanks again!

What is a good rule of thumb to go by as far as warming up time for this bike? It does seem to take a while to warm up, but since it is air cooled, I was told that I don't want it to sit too long. So what's a safe amount of time for it to warm up before I get it rolling? Thanks.

The 1982 models switched to a Mikuni BS32 carburetor. Instead of a choke, it features an idle enrichment circuit. For temperatures down to about mid 50s F. mine starts best by pulling the knob out to the first notch. Pull out further when colder than that. When the engine starts, it will idle too fast ( 2,500 +) after maybe 10 seconds. But if you try to push the knob in, even a small amount, it will run too lean and die - unless you hold the throttle open a little.
I usually pull the knob out to the first notch. After the bike starts, I go ahead and ride away, but very gently. After about 1/2 mile, I push the knob all the way in. Then it takes the bike about another mile before things are warmed up enough to ride aggressively. It will not be fully warmed up for several miles.
One more thing - I changed my pilot jets from .375 to .40 if I remember the numbers. This helped greatly with the cold response. The circuits have to be very clean for low speed to operate well. Good luck.

Sorry not looking to change my csr, but wondering if he is running a header on his. Havent heard of many with my bike that run 4 into 1, I was thinking of how it would sound and if that would change the gas mileage. Mines in the shop right now getting the carbs and choke rebuilt.

Now of course I do dream alot. Like maybe a 77 tail, change the seat, change the tank to get more gas mileage out of her, and slam the front forks say an inch or so. Oh yea 4 into 1 and have a pro paint job of orange with black pinstriping. Just dreaming thou.
