Started putting my bottom end together tonight. Got the welded crank in, main cap on, HD 2nd gear on, and transmission in cases. Other than the kickstarter, what else needs to be assembled BEFORE bolting the cases together. I want to get the cases together, for now all the stuff that can be added on after will be done later

Good luck bud. I can't think of anything else you need just to join the cases....but if there is something, someone more experienced than myself will chime in :)

Cam chain on the crank?

Proper O ring between the case halves?

U must install the clutch basket before the cases go together.
Did u replace the clutch BASKET springs(not clutch springs)? This would be wise for a big block.the cases must be split to do it later.
Is this your big block motor? i asume so since u have a bearing cap and billit second.

yessir, this is for the big block :) Yes, i have new clutch basket springs installed (could spin the old ones) and had the pins welded. Thanks for the help, i do have the cam chain on the crank, and the o-ring between the cases. I will make sure to attach the clutch basket first as i do not have it on yet. I cant wait to get this thing together. Now all i need is to build a stout head and get some cams/carbs (where the dollars really begin to add up :( )

i may be able to put u in tough with some used RS38's that need a rebuild, if interested.
i would consider a cam chain guide . it is a small guide that goes over the cam chain and sprocket . this keeps the chain in place when u are installing the cams.
1 job i do find very tedious, is installing the cams at the proper timing. if u are not careful to keep tension on the cam chain at all times, the chain can become dislodged from the crank sprocket. this is a big PITA. u must do this every time u reshim the cams.sometimes it gets lodeged beside the sprocket and it seems like it is inplace,VERY FRUSTRATING(to me anyways)
i believe Schnitz sells them, for about $20.i dont see it listed any more. u could call them and ask about it. Has anyone ever tried 1 of theses. every time i install my cams , i wish i had 1.

did u get an oil pan gate?

Mark,

You have no idea how much I lauged when I read that. I know somebody that just did that [bolted the cases together with the clutch basket on the workbench] with a drag bike. They're used to Suzuki's so they didn't think anything about it...

Yah i can see that happening.
just like when u buy a new cabinet or something. u try to put it together , without the instructions, or the instructions are so bad u cant figure them out. in the end u put the thing together and take it apart a dozen times before u get it right.
Sometimes we don’t look forward far enough in our KZ manuals either.

That is a definite YES. When u launch the oil goes to the back, away from the pickup.
U CAN MAKE 1 YOURSELF.
just get a small hinge from the hardware store and mod it a bit. i screwed mine to the side of the oil filter housing. this way u dont need to drill a hole on the pan that can leak.
i reamed the oil drain hole on top a wee bit to, then modded the oil cup for more flow to prevent crank case pressure build up. (which could cause leaks.)
there is a pic of this mod in my project. pm me if interested.

you could always put a mild topend on there and add the other stuff as your time and budget allow, just a thought
