I love ya, 9am5, but my motor is a "j" motor. I do not see any big caps. All I see looking from the side of the bike are what looks like 2 aluminum dowel pins about 1/4" pressed into holes flush with the head. THey are just forward of the spark plug tip.
It does have oil on top of the fin on the front and back, not just the front like I indicated in my earlier post.
Maybe the caps were used on earlier KZ motors? Maybe I do not see the caps? WTF? David

I have the same motor as you...click on my pic to enlarge it, the circled part is what I am talking about.

When you take the valve cover off these caps will come out, they are rubber and have aluminum on the outside to cover up the black rubber. As is the case here, you had no clue there was anything there and the leak managed to elude you, if you get the black ones you can see if oil is leaking past them. These get crusty as they age and leak like a sieve.

BTW, that is a pic of my motor BEFORE fixing the leaks.lol

Just a thought here. if u do have blow by, u may be adding to the oil leaks by blocking off the cam cover vents. when u get blow by, u add pressure to the crank case ,. if this presure is not relieved, it will try to pump out thohroughoil any crack it can, and take oil out with it.
if u suspect blowby, i would add venting , not remove it.

9am53, The hoses that I looped apparently are just EGR gases that are routed back to the airbox with a vac-controlled smog valve. Ergo, I do not think that removing the smog valve, and connecting the hoses to each other affected the blowby.
Now, I thought all engines has SOME blowby. IF, IF, IF my normal crankase breather below the carbs had become plugged for whatever reason, then that may cause excess internal engine crankcase pressure, pushing the oil/vapor out all these mystery places.
I will use the footpowder method to determine where the seepage is on top of my fins, and will let you know.

it is common to add an extra vent to a kz for this very reason. blow by and leaks. The J has this already. if the egr removes gases, it must be aiding in venting the crankcase, right?

Actually, the flow is in the other direction - fresh air to the exhaust to promote burning of unburned hydrocarbons (fuel).

Ergo, I do not think that removing the smog valve, and connecting the hoses to each other affected the blowby.

Correct.

Possibly, but more likely loose bolts or dried up o-rings, seals and gaskets.

Clean the engine, re-torque the cam cover and head bolts, powder test, repair.

Thanks Guys, I finally got a day off where I can work on my bike. I got it very clean with Simple Green. It IS definitely the cam caps leaking- mainly on the left side of the engine. I am going to pull the valve cover, and reseal the cam caps as best I can. While I am in there, I will check my valve clearances, and retorque the head bolt nuts.
BTW, I tried to attach pics from my computer HD, and it is not working. I do not have a Photobucket acct.
