I have a kz1000 bored to 1327, i'm curious to why i keep blowing starter clutchs, I've replaced a number of them in my life and am wondering if the engine mods require something a little more heavy duty then stock. If so can any one suggest a place for me to look?
Thanks

Several questions come to mind....

1) blowing starter clutchs:
Blowing meaning?... i.e. clutch gear itself breaking teeth, snapping in half etc....

Does "Blowing" occur after a certain time lapse indicating slow degradations or all is good then WHAM, gear busts...

2) Electric start, kick start or external starter?

3) Have you also been replacing the Needle bearings, rollers and Springs?

4) abnormal noises when starting or during normal engine running?

5) Possibly damper rubber clearances are off.

Best guess at this point, weak springs/roller travel free play...

This is out of my KZ900 Shop manual, maybe will help....

cranking psi is about 165. I have rebuilt one, needles springs rollers ect. When that one went it pushed the needles in enough to dent the back of the starter clutch. Its on its second now that I purchased off ebay (maybe the issue) but it looked fine. It seems like it just fails when your in mid crank and the engine fires. Now i'm getting the whiring noise of the starter still spinning after the engine starts(starter clutch not disengaging). It has the kick start, but I ca'nt kick the bike over myself. I should try the honda starter, i'm wondering if a weak starter can hurt the starter clutch?

Will the damper rubber cause catastrophic starter clutch problems? Because I will def check that , thanks for the info

my 1200cc has 205 psi and no trouble with the Honda starter.
i wonder if u are getting a kick back that destroys the clutch?
this doesn’t sounds like a starter problem, but i do wonder if it turns over too slow, if that could affect the clutch with kick back?

you might very well be using the wrong size(thickness) damper....if your starter is good and the pins and rollers are good and everything is put together right, using the wrong size damper can kill the whole deal in short order....too thin and it wont engage right and if too thick, will drag the starter to an early death....
