I believe I'm in need off new clutch springs and someone told me I could put an extra washer on the bolt until I get some.Does this really work and do I just add the washers to the backside of the 5 springs? It's a z1 thanks

That might help a little but as I recall the free length of those springs was about 1" so I am not sure a washer would do much to increase spring force.

Why bother. You will have to do twice the work and use twice the oil to do all this work. You can have a new set of springs from Z1E in a matter of days. In the meantime just ride the way it is. When you replace the springs take the opportunity to clean and deglaze the clutch plates. New springs are less than $20 including shipping from Z1E.

New springs the best idea, but I would also check the free play at the side cover adjustment as well as the cale at the lever.

I wouldn't want to do the job twice especially considering that you'll need to buy the gasket twice (assuming you plan to do the job correctly). As stated by others, just order the springs (and gasket) and ride as is for a week. One other note; once you open up the clutch you should measure the friction plates to ensure that they are within service limits. Otherwise new springs won't fix a clutch slipping problem. Ed

well I got a little anxious and tore the clutch plates out of the bike to find 4 cracked fiber plates,I got 4 more good ones from a buddy cleaned and deglazed all of them, reassembled,I even reused the old gasket and wow what a difference no slipping and no leaks iether.I still may order a whole clutch kit soon anyway but, this was a good temporary fix.thanks cheers.

Post some pictures of what you found cracked. I would be interested. Especially on a stock bike. If the clutch was overheating than it was slipping and the springs are still bad. as I have mentioned before in other posts. The springs go bad with time under compression.
