crank case sealant? was created by idkleine
I'm about to mate the 2 halves of my kz650 engine and I'm wondering what my options are for sealant. To be honest I will probably be back in there in the next couple of years so I don't want anything to hardcore. 3bond is the best Ive read on other threads but I'm wondering about something easier to remove. I have a tube of permatex motoseal 1 grey and it says "for frequently dissasembled engines" But who knows what that means. I'm probably not gonna use it unless someone here recommends it. It really doesn't seem like anything special. My surfaces are in pretty good shape and are super clean. Any advice?

I have had success with 3 Bond 1211, and Permatex Ultra Gray.

Ditto, I think the 3-bond is more "permanent" than the permatex which is very easy to scrape off.

Ok. The permatex might be the right thing for me. Ill just make sure the surfaces are REALLy clean. Another product I really like is Great Stuff. But I don't know if its appropriate for case halves. It seems a little thicker than most sealants so I would worry that it wouldn't squeeze out all the way. It is really "great stuff" though.

There is also "gaska-cinch" or something like that.
It is a thin yellow liguid, like yama-bond.
I have had a pint can for over 20 years.
It has a sponge applicator on the lid.
Nice stuff

I have used the Loc-Tite #51531 anaerobic gasket eliminator flange sealant which is a toothpaste size tube for about $22.00 here. The nice thing about anaerobic sealants is that they do not start to dry until it has no air around it giving lots of working time and also unlike RTV products, you don't get blobs falling into passageways. This stuff is a purple colour and can be easily applied and being a thin consistancy is easy to tell when parts are covered. good luck David B)

Believe you answered your own question...

"3bond is the best Ive read on other threads"... Here as well as others have replied. To prevent oil leaks thus insure engine oil pressure to specification as well, ideally lubricating internal engine parts etc...

Why use anything else, doesn't make sense not to.

Just my 2 worthless cents...

3-bond is what the mechanics at the local Kawi/Yamaha dealer uses to seal cases. I asked.
