Oil In Stator cover.

Is there supposed to be engine oil in the Stator/dynamo cover of a 75 kz400d? I saw some dripping so I took the cover off and there was probably 6 ounces in there. Anyone that knows, please let me know

Not sure about the 400 but the 900/1000 motors "do" have oil in the stator cover

I don't know about the KZ400, but the 81 KZ650 doesn't.

I don't think there should be any oil in there if it exposes the coils and electrical windings. They should be as dry as possible. Any liquid will weaken the insulation, and is just a matter of time before it fails. The crankcase should have an oil seal behind the alternator. Of course this oil seal may eventually go bad.

Oil in the stator does not sound right but the 900 is designed that way on purpose.

ALL KZ900/1000/1100s ZN1100 Zx1100A KZ1300 Zn1300 KZ750 ZX750A have oil in the stator area. You will have to get the manual for your particular bike and find out

Here is a simple way to find out if the oil belongs there or not. With that cover removed, put an oil pan under that side of the bike. Tilt the bike to about a 45* angle toward that side and see if oil pores out. If it dose, than the oil belongs there. If it do not, or just drips out than the oil do doesn't belong there. Simple.

shop manual for kz1000/1100 as part of stator removal says "place an oil pan under bike." sounds like they expect oil to be in there but dont say how much.bj

We have already determined that the 900/1000/1100 has oil in there we just don't know if the 400 is supposed to have oil there.

You will have to get the manual for your particular bike and find out. --- Yes, the FSM should have a detailed lubrication diagram showing all oil flows.

For example, the FSM lubrication diagram for large fours shows a few drops from the crankcase going through the crankcase bearing area on into the alternator section.

I believe the bikes that have the starter clutches under the alternator cover have oil accesible to the alternator. However, it should never be full, it's usually a tablespoon full or so. That would be on the KZ400 twins, KZ750 twins, and the 900/1000/1100 bikes. The 650/750-4 and 550/500/400-4 bikes had the starter clutch in the transmission case so their alternator housings should be bone dry.

If I recall correctly, the oil just occasionally gets splashed in there on the 400 through the left crankshaft bearing which is a non-sealed ball type. There also may be a cutout in the wall to let the oil return to the crankcase.
