Hole in my case or made like that?

O.K. heres my new dilema. I bought a kz1000 engine from someone so i decided to put in a new cam chain, so I flipped it over and cracked the cases. Now I went to take out the trans to inspect it and noticed a small hole on the top case, behind the trans gear on the clutch side.(get all that?) It looks like it was made that way but I'm not sure and I'm not sure on what year it is but the numbers do start with Z1 if that helps. Any ideas anyone? I look on ebay to see if it was in any of the cases for sale but I didnt see any with a clear pic. Can anyone help? The hole is only the size of half my pinky nail.

1978 KZ1000 Engine case... Very similar to 1973-1975 Z1 and KZ900 cases... Almost identical!

No need to apologize, I know its hard without a pic so I'll put one on tomorrow but, if you were looking down on the upper case when its flipped up side down you will have your clutch side on your left and sprocket side on your right. Now the gear right in front of your kickstart, right behind it, theres a small hole. I apologize again, I'll try to put some pics on tomorrow.

Yes there is a small hole in the casting, right by the starter, It drains off water or gas.

I got a free Z1 engine 20 years ago. Someone tried to split the cases. Never had the oil pan off. Cracked the cases by the crank bolts. Forgot about 2 or 4 bolts. I had the best welder in the world, at the time.
"Puppet" weld it up. And to my knowledge it is still together.
