High compression starter
29 Apr 2010 20:34
Is it possible to find an aftermarket starter for my 11 to1 1200cc kit engine or am I destined to kick start?

What year/model bike are we talking about here?
FYI, on my '82 CSR, after I put in the 1135/10.25 pistons, I installed a starter from a Honda CB900. Made a HUGE difference. The stock KZ starter really struggled to turn the engine, and the CB starter turned with no effort. It wasn't exactly a direct bolt-on swap though. The power cable terminal post was in a different position, and I had to use a grinder to clearance the engine cover.

The Honda starter is one proven way to go. Another option is to send your starter motor out for modification. Paul Cashio in Belle Chasse Louisiana has been doing them for dragracers with button start big inch high compression motors for years.Had one in a 14.5-1 1428.

look for a cb-f model with .8 kw rather than a .7kw.
they come in booth flavours, u will have to ask the seller to look at the starter, it is stamped on the side.
u will need to clearance your sprocket cover to fit over the starter wire.

On my J series 1150 motor with 11.5:1 I have absolutely no problem with the stock starter. It turns over like it did before I did the build.

As far as i know all the later J style ( KZ11 - GPZ11 ETC ) engines with no kickstart provision use the heavier duty four brush motors which are a straight bolt in upgrade.
So will any j or gpz starter work?

Well, I did some research. The four brush starter started going into the KZ1000/1100 in 1982. My 1981 motor has the older 2 brush starter. My motor is built to 1150cc and has 11.5: pistons. I do not seam to have any problems starting the bike. The starter cranks it just like it did when it was a 1000CSR motor.

Otto does your starter have a kwh rating stamped on the side? will your j stater fit a KZ?
