My valve seals are well worn, so I intend to replace them.

Should the valves or valve guides be replaced also?

Will a "automotive type", a standard valve spring compression tool fit the Z1 head?

if the guides are worn then yes, replace. a standard automotive valve spring compressor wont work you engine uses recessed spring pockets a standard compressor cant get in to them with out being modified.

I had 75k miles on mine when I rebuilt it and every one of the guides measured out to new spec. The machinist told me the guides don't wear unless the valve stem has side torque on it which shouldn't happen if they are set up right.

I bought a full set of new guides and din't need a single one.

To my knowledge, my 76 Kz900 has approximatly 40k miles. As far as I know, the head has never been off. I appreciate the input and may get into replacing the valve seals soon.

When I sent my head (34k miles)to the machine shop, part of the cost per valve was measuring all of the components. Of the 8 valves, two of the exhaust guides needed replacement. One of the valve had bent and the other was sticking so much that he recommended replacing.

Once the heads apart, check all the measurements before ordering parts....saves on time and shipping. (Ask me how I know this... :P

Check the vave stems as well.

If a .276" solid pilot drops all the way into the guide. Replace it.

Check Ebay for spring compressors. I just picked on up for those small valve ATV heads for $30 with 3 adapters & it adjusts on both ends...which is pretty cool!
