APE Cam Chain Tensioner adjustment was created by hocbj23
OK, like so many others I am going to install an APE cam chain tensioner on the KZ 1000. No problems getting the old one off or the new one on. Question is: How do u properly adjust it for the correct tension WITHOUT taking the head off.I have heard all sorts of suggestions from as tight as u can get it in with ur fingers and then back off an 1/8 or 1/4 or 1/2 turn to as tight as u can get it and leave it that way, etc. I have no tech spec on the spring tension of the old "automatic" tensioner so I am a bit lost here.Anybody? Thanks much.bj

The best thing to do is to call APE and they will tell you the exact procedure. On here there are as many procedures as there are opinions. there must be a hundred threads on here telling you how to do it and there are a hundred procedures.

When APE states "until contact" this means "tighten" with your fingertips. I had to call them to confirm this. Than back off 1/4 turn. You can put any two cylinders at TDC. This is only to take any load from the chain.

I understand. The stock "automatic" tensioner is running some level of pressure against the guide so I felt hand tight was what was inferred.Thanks.bj
