I am working on a '76 kz900 with 53k miles on it. I'm going through the top end and I know I need to get a valve job done and I do plan on it. I am also considering going from 900-1000cc. I was just wanting to get some advice. Would it be better to have the boring on the block or should I try getting one from Overstockpartsgalore.com? The block is in very good condition and I'm trying to think of the best way to go about it. While at the same time being budget minded. I know several of you have experience with overstockpartsgalore. I've read through those threads I think they might be the cheapest route to go but I want someone with way more experience than me to help guide me through.

What other considerations should I take into account in a rebuild project like this? I know I will need to rejet my carbs which is not a big deal and I'm getting a new vance and hines 4-1 pipe. I just want to make sure I do everything right. I want her running for years to come.

"Overstockpartsgalore.com"...

Due to MRE doing the machining, what just has occurred with Tony & in my own experience with those kits.... BORE your existing cylinder for the 1015CC pistons.

If you want to go larger displacement such as 1045/1075, get new sleeves and have your top engine case bored out for the new sleeve as well...

Other considerations for power.... Send your head to Larry Cavanaugh and have the valves, springs, guides and OEM seals replaced with the Port & polish....

Get a .365 or .384 or .395 Web camshaft... Pending what your desired operations are... Low to mid range, or top end power...

Pending your build and $$$, throw some Keihin CR Specials in there as well... If 1015cc kit and pending your riding style 29-31mm is more then enough...

Even with a 1075cc build, 31mm is about the highest you'll require...

Get a Dyna electronic ignition in there as well...

Install then hold on to your life for that old girl is going to freaking fly!

Well my budget is rather tight so I don't want to spend too much. That's why I was asking about the kits because they seemed reasonable but it sounds like I will get out the door and on the road with less money by having someone just bore out the block I have now. Which is in really good shape. I might just hone the cylinders and go from there. We'll see what happens.

I don't need anything crazy or expensive just something nice that will run for a long time to come. Everything is in surprisingly good shape. except needing a valve job. I have a place locally that has been recommended several times. I'm going to see what the story is on that.

I'm looking to spend 1500 total to finish the project for the time being. I will probably do small upgrades and changes over time but I want to get her back on the road before my head explodes from not riding :-D. Kind of why I wanted to get the kit instead of sending it off. Although my head is going to be out so I don't see any reason not to do it all at the same time.

$1500 sounds tight if you bore it out. I just had my 1000cc cylinder bored to 1075. Wiesco piston kit and boring/honing at APE set me back $750. Add head machine work, parts, gaskets and miscellaneous odds and ends. You'll be bumping against that budget in no time

Oh I completely realize how tight my budget is. I wish it wasn't or I would have been done with the bike last summer. I may skip the boring and just hone the cylinders and put on new rings. I already have all the gaskets. Thanks Mom and dad. They hooked me up at Christmas. I will have my head done in short order as soon as I get my tax return. I've already done quite a bit of work to freshen up things up to this point. Just need to get the major stuff done to get it running like it should. Hopefully I'll have it done in a month. I plan on going out to my buddies and cleaning up the frame and finish cleaning the motor and replacing gaskets.

I'm going to check the clutch over too. Try to clean it up so it will run better. It's going to be a process but I'll spend a week out there after I get off from work at 2 and should get everything buttoned up and ready to get put back into the frame and ready to ride by mid may. As long as my head it done by then.

Be sure to check your cam rollers and guides. my 900 has 34k and the rollers were worn and brittle and the front guide was grooved. It runs about $100 to replace them all.

Alright so here is what I have decided to do.
I'm sending my head to Larry next Friday to have it blueprinted and have a valve job done. Guides and damaged valves will be replaced.
I have decided against boring it out for the moment. I am going to hone the cylinders and replace the piston rings.
I'm hoping to find someone who can bead blast the rest of the cases since Larry is going to do that on the head.
I'm going to replace all of the gaskets and seals across the engine. Clean up the clutch discs. Replace the drive sprockets. New Cam chain. Properly rebuild and sync the carbs.

I'm doing more and I will have that detailed in my project post here kzrider.com/index.php?option=com_kunena&...w&catid=11&id=324411
And yes I do plan on posting a ton of Pictures as I progress.

Hopefully I will have all of this done in about 3 weeks. I really want to get riding.

the cheapest way to pick up 100 cc's, is to bore the 903 cyl to match a set of GOOD used stock 1015cc pistons.B)
