hi everyone, i need to get a new clutch and was wondering what you all suggest.
it's a kz 1100 shaft. it is stock with a four into one with no baffel...i think its stock but was told that it is punched out to 1300...never tore apart to check and dont know if there is 1300 kit for these.
i'll be hard on the clutch this summer as i might be dragging at the RMC with the black widow racing team and this is my daily rider. i have not torn into the clutch to spec it but it slips at high RPMs in 1st-3rd...most days. other days it does not slip but want to replace anyways.
thanks, justin

pull the steel plates out deglaze them and re install then put a bit stiffer than stock spring pack in and make sure you use a motorcycle specific high grade oil perferably non synthetic running down south like you are i'd be using 20w50 pretty tought to get a 1300 in a stock block maybe a 1260 but 1300 would be iffy. does it still use the stock block. by the way the stock plates are the toughest and the best so i wouldn't waste my time and money on any thing else. unles your fibers measure out of spec then by all means replace them but if there still inspec reuse them

It is not likely u have a 1300cc in there unless the side of the block looks dif than stock. big blocks have shallower fins and usualy have a brand name on the side that has been cast in big letters. MTC and APE come to mind.
They will run very hot too.
I agree with timeb on the clutch.

yeah i dont think it is a 1300 either, last owner told me that the owner before him punched it out to 1300. but i did not get it for the 1300...took it in trade for my 85 dodge omni GLH, i got the better end of the deal...damn GLH would leave me sit every time i took it out. but back to the clutch i think i'll try new springs and spec the friction plates. if they are out what should i replace with...EBC,barnett,APE extra plate, vesrah, or any others.
thanks, justin

Justin, offer these, if your' clutch is presently slipping in the "meat" of your' bikes powerband, and you intend to take it to the strip, New friction plates are in order. and like Timebomb, I feel OE plates are best for wear & longevity. HD springs ? well, If you must... but bear in mind. Asside from a stiff lever, HD springs/additional plates, accelerate wear at cl. basket fingers and primary gear plate/springs. different needs, differnt tools...Barnett make an excellent clutch, strong, effective, but tends to "stick" after setting, & changes engage point depending on use & temp. EBC & Vesrah plates using Kevlar In my opinion are "puny" Your' results may vary. Just my 2cents from experiance. G

Maybe just needs a clutch push rod adjustment. Simple, quick and easy. Routine maintenance. And often neglected.

Good Fortune! :)

unless the stock plates are warped (the steels) or measure out of spec or are missing material the stock plates can be reused i have a stack that i take to the dragstrip with me and not one plate in the bunch has less than about 25,000 miles on them no new ones for me.and buy the way i have a low ten second bike and another one the runs 9's and hopefully this year the 8's so i do know what i'm talking about. stock plates are the toughest and best.

I seriously doubt that the clutch is bad on this bike. On the other hand, your springs most likely are. Unless the previous owner did a LOT of drag racing and I mean a LOT, the clutch will not be warn out. These clutches are good for well over 100,000 Mi. Replace the springs and make sure that everything is adjusted properly and you will be fine. If the owner by mistake put in oil or an oil additive with Moli in it than the plates could be loaded up. Just remove them and scrub them with a Scotch "Brite" pad with some good detergent. I had to do that when my bike shot up to 11,000 every time I punched it in first, second and third. I just cleaned them up and installed new springs and re-installed the old clutch. this fixed everything. When I measured the plates they were only .05mm less than a set of new ones were. these plates have 35,000mi on them. When you deglaze the steel plates between the clutch plates DO NOT use sand paper, just use the "Scotch Brite" pad to do that also. If you make the steel plates too coarse you will wipe out the clutch plates for sure.

make sure you deglazed the steels first.
