750 twin starter clutch prob was created by KZCool
quick question for you guys who know stuff about the 750 twins, I have a 76 and i just took the strater clutch off, checked it and put it back on. I hit the starter to check if it was still slipping and it unscrewed the opposite threaded screw that is supposed to hold the clutch on. I look at the manual, tighted it about to specified amount and hit the starter again few a sec. It was fine but I just want to make sure it wont unscrew its self after I have the gasket and cover back on. Any thoughts?

I used blue loctite on mine. But, there is a trick to tightening the reverse thread bolt that holds the flywheel on: You use a giant flat blade screwdriver with the tip wedged into one of the holes on the flywheel outer edge and the end of the screwdriver resting against the chassis near the foot peg mount studs.

The guys at the twin forum are experts on this stuff:

KZCool, Blue it was that eased my pain.

I heard use locktite on the allen bolts, but should I use it on the outer bolt as well. By the way, I used the axle trick too lol. great innovation by the japanese. I don't have any lock tight either, could I just used a high temp gasket sealer?

The handy axle trick came from someone else (Steele, if I remember correctly). I just happened to have a handy picture to post.

If the bolt does not come loose again, you may never need to use anything. The gasket sealer may work ok, never thought to try it.

Remember it is the small thread in the end of the crank that takes the locking, not the thread in the end of the flywheel (ask me how I know this as the above picture was my second attempt).

Also just a reminder, the 750 twin crank turns backwards as compared to the 4 cylinder engines. Rotation is clockwise as viewed from the starter/stater end as shown above.

Good Luck,
Jim

Definitely use blue Loctite. Gasket sealer isn't the same.

I got it really tight, would you recomend trying to take it back off even if its really hard, or just leave it if its already locked?

I thought I had mine tight (before I used the blue thread lock) and found out differently in the parking lot of the local DMV. I did not want to kick or push start it and ride 5 miles home (possible damage to the loose parts or locking up)so I pulled the stater cover off in the parking lot to tighten the bolt.

That is when I also discovered removing the stater cover, when on the center stand, only leaks a little oil but on the side stand it is lots and lots of oil.

If you are needing an oil/filter change in the near future, at that time you will already have the foot peg, shifter and front sproket cover removed and will have time to get some blue thread locker between now and then.

I don't regret doing mine as it is one less thing to worry about while riding.

Ultimatly it is your bike and your decision.

Good Luck which ever path you choose,
Jim

So I tried taking the bolt off and couldn't get it to budge. I had stripped it somewhat so I tried filling down the sides to make it the next size smaller and couldn't get it to form right. I figure if I can't get it, it wont come off lol

so I took the starter clutch off of the bike and noticed that it had a crack all the way out from the center to the edge. I think this i why the clutch wont grab the flywheel gear. I actually took the starter chain off and now the bike is only kickstart. :S
