Okay I need help, I have a project bike that I've been taking 3 steps forward and 2 steps back on it for a year and I finally am close to the end after having the head rebuilt. I have been adjusting the valve shims and this is what I have:

exhaust 1 to 4 is .005 .004 .003 .003 thousands
or in metric .127 .102 .076 .076 mm

intake 1 to 4 is .004 .004 .003 .003 thousands
or in metric .102 .102 .076 .076 mm

I don't know if the number 1 exhaust is to big or not, I don't have an other 2.45 shim so it has a 2.40 in it. I would like to button it up this weekend, but I'll wait to order a new shim if I have to.

Correct me if I'm wrong, good gap for 1075 should be between .003 and .005

Seeing as how the valves usually seat after a rebuild about a half thou or so, You are a bit too tight on the 3 and 4 exhaust side. Those suckers get hot, and tighten up fast.

Might want to do some swapping - the intake side can be tighter - like right at 003, even less, but not less than 002.

Anyways, the 005 is not too big, its going to come in after a thousand miles.

gaps too large is not a big problem, just noisy. Gap too small - problems.

my .02cents

i dont know if 1075 makes a diff....clearances are clearances no matter the displacement.....you can run what you have.......i would only run em about 200 miles and recheck the tighter ones.....just my .02.....

1075... little higher compression, unknown cams probably running a little hotter right...

OK, what I learned off Larry & Plumm....With engine mods will run a little hotter especially on the exhaust side.

Intake clearance: .05-.10mm
Exhaust clearance: .10 - .15mm

I did this on my build, no issues... After 500 mile break in, rechecked clearances and the exhaust side clearance decreased towards the .10mm...

My intakes stayed right around .08mm... all in all, still in spec....

BTW, certain Triumph models use the same 29mm diameter shim so if you have a local shop in your area you'll be good for a source... Found a local shop here, $6 each. B)

Thanks for the info I just want to do everything right so I don't have to go through rebuilding the engine any time soon.
I'll try the Triumph shop on Monday or I'll order the shims from Z1Enterprises.

I wanted to ask you if the ColorTune spark plug really works?

Thanks again,
Dirk

ive had luck with the colortune plug, except on one bike(not sure what the guy found out but i think it had valve issues). i do my bike 2-3 times a year, especially after valve work.

it takes a good eye and a lot of patience though, be ready for a long process.

if you dont wanna shell out the bucks for the colortune you could just keep a good eye on plug color, just be very wary of white plugs.

if you cant fix it with a hammer and duct tape, get a bigger hammer and more duct tape!!

"I wanted to ask you if the Color-Tune spark plug really works?".... See for yourself! ;)

Turn up the volume for you can actually hear the idle change... We've always heard where pro tuners can do this by ear...

Now I get it and fully understand what that meant! B)
This tool helped and still does for that matter where you get to see where she's at in the combustion chamber ignitions...

And then sync them all up with the Morgan unit, holly crap... Sweetness... perfect harmony... B)

I can also see where if you're having ignition issues, you'd be able to see inside the chamber... In troubleshooting, how much easier could that be...

For me, definitely worth the money...

Thank you for the offer, I'm in the San Antonio area, but I ordered the shims from Z1E this morning after checking with the Triumph dealer here. hopefully they'll be here in a few days.
