650 ring placement question was created by flht1997
There has been some discussion lately about ring end gap placement and I found something interesting the other day during a disassembly. I bought a 78’ 650 about 15 years ago from the original owner and the story I got was that the guy and his friend bought matching bikes in the spring of 78’ his friend layed his bike down around July with about 600 miles on it, and it was totaled without insurance. The engine was damaged pretty badly. Intake ports cracked off, lots fin damage. But they removed it anyway to save for spare parts. The engine got water in the cylinders and it rusted up. It sat outside since I got it with lots more water in it, but it had never been touched since the factory. Anyway upon disassembly and pressing out the pistons I noticed that the rings were of course rusted in place, where they had last stopped running in 78’ and surprisingly all the compression ring gaps are lined up and most of the oil control rings are also lined up. Why do you think this occurred, were they installed this way from the factory? Or do some sort of harmonics occurs while the engine runs that lines up the gaps. Pic is of one of the pistons but they are all the same

Do it right or don't bother doing it at all.

The odds of all four pistons having the rings lined up is bordering on miniscule...this suggests some sort of human factor during assembly.

I have seen that before in engines that I have rebuilt, my guess is factory error, but then without seeing it assembled you never know

rings will move around they definitly don't stay in one place it could be just that they found there happy place.
