Clutch Replacement. was created by BIGD
With the help of this site, it has been determined my clutch needs replacing. It is probably original. What parts in the clutch need replacing, or do I need to take it apart first. I would like the job to be done right. When I need to order parts would Z1 Enterprises be one of the choices, or would OEM parts be the best for this job. Thanks in advance. Info on this site has been extremely helpful.

It is very simple to find out what you require. I thought I needed a clutch also, but it only wound up requiring clutch springs. Those are MUCH cheaper than a clutch. First of all Z1E can get you what ever you require. If your springs are more than 10 years old, than it is almost for sure that they will be. Mine wee so bad that when I shifted into second and third and punched it, the engine revved to about 10K until it heated up enough to displace the oil and catch. The springs are only about $15-$20 for the set, and are very simple to change. The clutch pack is on the other hand more costly. First of all you will require a clutch cover gasket. That you know that you will require for sure. If you have Phillips head screws on the clutch cover, you should also replace those also with Allan head bolts because you are guaranteed to bugger up some of the Phillips heads. If you have Allans already you are set.
1) Remove clutch cover.
2) Remove 5 bolts holding clutch springs.
3) slide out friction plates and steel plates.
4) Wipe off friction plates and measure each one in a couple of spots to see if they are in spec. Most likely you will find out that they are well in spec and they will just require de-glazing.
5) If plates are under spec than just order the entire APE kit with plates and springs from Z1E for about $100.
6) if plates are in spec than just order the springs.
7) very carefully remove old gasket from both surfaces using a either a gasket scraper or a single edge razor blade.
8) if old clutch is GOOD than de-glaze with a plastic scrubbing pad (Scotchbrite pad)Do this in a soapy water solution using a strong dish washing soap solution. Make sure that you de-glaze both the friction plates and steel plates.
9) allow to dry
10) reassemble everything, make sure you leave gasket dry.

If you require the clutch than this is what you will require.

If your plats are good than you will require this.

Just to update my notes. I just realized that you have an 81 1000M1 this means that you have Alan bolts already installed. This will make the job a bit quicker. Also make sure ABSOLUTELY SURE that you never use oil with EITHER OR PTFE or MOLLY these substances will load up a clutch in a jiffy and it will slip like crazy. If you think that you may have already used these substances than soak the plates in a water based solvent (strong degreaser) like ZEP Citrus Cleaner. This can be bought at Home Depot. Use the "scotch brite" pad to scrub the friction pads to remove any and all of these substances. This can also be used to clean a greasy engine or rear wheel loaded with chain lube. If you use it on the tire (which is fine) make sure that you use some lemon oil or other furniture oil on the tire so it will not dry out on you prematurely. For more info on the proper oil to use in your bike go to this link.

Your steel plates can be roughed up using a dual action sander with some 120 grit sandpaper.Wash off the plates afterwards to remove any grit/metal particles.

I found the Scotch Brite pad more than adequate for the steel plates also. They do not have to be that rough. If you make them too rough they will eat up the clutch plates. You really just want to deglaze them. Once I replaced the springs and washed my clutch the thing grabs instantly when released.
