starter clutch

starter clutch was created by rosken
Hi all, i have the usual starter clutch problems, (i.e. slipping, whirring sound,) renewed the springs and rollers, still the same, striped it all again and replaced the cog that they grip on, still the same, replaced the starter and battery, still the same, so dam annoying! any one really know how to fix this?

The slipping/whirring sound...
is it durring starting? or after starting/while running?
You can check the starter clutch by hand with the cover off. You should be able to turn the clutch counter-clockwise and it should grab and turn the engine over constantly. When you turn it clockwise, it should drag slightly and no longer grab the engine.
If you are using a really slick synth oil, it can cause starter clutch slipping issues when the clutch gear shaft gets worn/galled.
Replace all contact surfaces and make sure everything is assembled exact, or...
Rough up all the rollers and gear shaft with some 150+ sandpaper, using horizontal motions only, not around them but along thier length.
That should do it for you.

yes it does catch one way and turn free the other, i will try roughing the rollers with sandpaper, thanks.
