CYLINDER BASE GASKET SEALANT PROCEDURE was created by JOHN LUCAS
The manual says to apply silicone to the rear inner stud base area. Why just there and not the front (ex side)too?
Any guidence would be appreciated -1980 KZ1000 LTD

i never use any sealant of any kind myself it makes it easier to remove for the next guy.

My guess would be that's the area where the oil pass through going up into the head is, but that's just a guess. If they say use it, I would use it. Something like 3-bond or some good sealant.

I have wonder about this myself. the oil passes up the outer rear studs, so why would Kawi say to seal the inner rears? the only thing that i can think of is, possibly the oil has a habit of creeping by the O ring around the cam chain galley under the head, in this area, and then fills the stud cavity? it still doesn’t make sense, since there would be no pressure there.
if u feel the need to silicone somewhere, i would do the outer rear seals. this is where i find they leak. also it is a good idea to have the cases and blocks, mating surfaces, milled for trueness, if u have a constant leak issue. they have been known to be out of true.
