Bearing shells was created by idkleine
I have my 81 kz650csr torn all the way down and I have some questions about the crankshaft bearings. The bearing shels appeared to be decent until I removed them from the case and I noticed that they have a gun metal blueish tint to them that Im guessing is from too much heat. It is only on the rear part of the bearings (toward the tranny) on the main bearings. The rod bearings are the same way except blue all the way around. Is this something that is commonly found on these? Could there be something else wrong. could the crankshaft be compromised? I will say that I do ride pretty hard.
I want to order new bearings but can not figure out which ones to order. Bike bandit lists black, blue, and Brown ones for this bike. How can I identify which ones I need. The old ones don't say what color. they just say DOJ on the main bearings and OK20D on the rod bearings. And if I polish the crankshaft in the lathe will I need a different size? The crankshaft has some light scoring but I think its usable. Any tips would be most helpful. I want to do it right.

Post photos of the crank so people can see the damage otherwise we are just guessing in the dark. That said it doesn't take much damage to the journals to create a lot of heat and cause bearing failure.

The color coded bearings are sizes you need to put a micrometer on the crank and find the exact journal size to select the right one. There is a extensive write up in the Factory service manual. I recommend you but one if you are going crank-deep into the motor; but if you really need the info and won't buy the book I can scan that page for you tonight.

bought it because I was told it would never run again...I like to prove people wrong.

anytime you see a bule color, its from heat as you thought.
Look at the oil pump and screen real close, lack of oil will cause heat and scratchs on the crank.
and a pic would be very helpful

Don't touch your crank unless you need to. You can use a mild metal cleaning product to remove any bearing materal gauled onto the surface but do NOT do anything to the crank journals unless you need to. First thing is first, with your cases apaprt plastigauge your main bearings, then on your lathe plastigauge your rods. If the clearences are not correct then worry aobut the crank, if they are good then move on.

As ststed above Babitt's online is a good source for your parts, your local delaer can order them too theay are avialbe from kawasaki.

Kawasaki parts website: www.kawasaki.com/DefaultFrame.aspx?strCo.../VICHOOSEVEHICLE.ASP

Babitts:http://www.babbittsonline.com/

There are size marks visible on the mains and rod shells, this changed a bit from year to year, but there is a chart in the manual to get the proper clerence for the color mark on the bearing shell. If you can't see them assume they are all marked black for connecting rods, and blue for the crank mains. When you get the new inserts plastiguage everyting again to verify clearences are correct.

Edit: I just looked your bearings up, it appears there are three rod bearing sizes available and the convention for 1981 is deifferent then the 1980 I rebuilt so your manual will have the right chart for identification.

The rod bearings are 13034-50, 13034-51, 13034-52

Most likely your mains have been superceeded by p/n: 19028-1917

I do realize that the different colors represent sizes. I found a used "genuine" service manual on ebay so I nabbed it. My clymer has oil clearance data but none about bearing shell sizes. Here are pics:
