I bought new rubber dampers to go on the shaft of the cam chain idler sprockets. Redline's website recommends grinding them down so they are flush with the top of the cylinder. They say with a one piece head gasket you should do this or they can cause an oil leak. Before I go and grind down brand new parts, do you guys do this?

Nope (no grind flush)... I have a one piece head gasket and zero leaks... ;)

I did use High temp Permatex them in place on the flat spot of the idler gear pins.

it must be because i came from a family of carpenters but i figured out along time ago those stock rubbers harden pretty quickly so i whittle all my own out of oak or maple. i know its sounds funny but trust me they work great. and i do cut them so that they are flush and won't crush the head gasket. i use oak or maple because it is a hard wood that wont swell or do anything wierd like come apart.

Haha Tim thats priceless. I use wood for all kinds of silly things too.

My engine doesn't have these dampers, I figure thats why my center idler is all chewed up. I'm gonna get one of the flat spotted pins and dampers to go with my new one, but I think I'm gonna leave the idler sprockets without them. She makes a racket but oh well.

ive done it.....seemed to make sense to me......be carefull though....they grind down fast and try to keep em square...super glue in place....hit it right the first time with the glue....you have 1.5 secs working time.....
