Z1 to KZ interchangability was created by cplescia
Greetings fellow Kawi guys & gals.

I hope some of you experts may be able to help me. I run a 1974 Z1 in my race car (a Vintage Legrand D Sports Racer) and have acquired 79 KZ 1000.

Dimensionally the engines appear to be the same. However, I have a special oil pan on the Z1 as well as a customized oil pump that I would like to pull off the Z1 and put on the KZ.

I know that here are subtle differences (like the valve keepers) but was hoping these two items were interchangeable.

Any expertise on this?

Thanks in advance

Here is a pic of the installation for the curious.

On the 79 (MK2 motor) there some major internal deferences such as the crank shaft cam gears and some others, but the external components are all interchangeable. On the 78 and earlier motors virtually everything is interchangeable.

The good news is it's a MKll engine- stronger cases (check out the web thickness of the MKll vs. the smaller Z1)and crankshaft. Always a good thing in racing right?
The difference in crank and cam gears is 16t.crank /32t. cams w/ 124 link camchain for the MKll vs. 122 link camchain 15t.crank / 30t.cams for the Z1.

Also the MK2 engine is the first with the 20 amp alternator instead of the 12 amp one on the 73-78 engines. plus it coms with a stock IC 2.2 Ohm ignition.

u can interchannge all of the parts. u just need to use the crank in conjuntion with the cam chain and gears. as mentioned above, they have a dif tooth count.
What did u do dif to the oil pump and pan?
