Is it possible to do a test on a bike that's not running? I have a 75 Z1 motor that used to run strong, been setting for 10+ years, still turns over with kickstarter, has 31,000 miles on the odometer, don't know if right? Should I try to get bike running again? How long sitting is to long ?

if it turns over...and there is still an intact bike...then why not try and throw a bettery in and cross your fingers...claen the carbs..change the oil...plugs...and see if it runs.....

You can test the compression. If the carbs are off the bike, it's a tad easier since you won't have to fiddle w the throttle. Although it turns over, while the plugs are out, I'd probably go ahead & put some lubricant in the holes - a little 3-in-1 oil or something.
Unless someone states otherwise, with the car off & the car keys in your pocket, you can jumper the bike using the car battery (assuming the battery is the correct voltage for your bike). That's how I did mine: carbs off bike, plugs out, jumper cables from truck battery (12V), etc.

I bought both of my bikes from folks that had let them sit for about 10-12 years. After changing fluids, plugs, points and battery they both fired up without too much of a fight.

My KZ1300 was sitting outside for 14 years. I took the top end off just because after I drained the oil I found antifreeze in the oil. When I puled the head off I found that everything looked in perfect shape. There was no evidence of any rust anywhere in the bores or anywhere els for that mater. The carburetors were a different story however.

No such thing as sitting too long... just parts that require replacing.
You don't have to remove the carbs to perform the compression test if you're not too comfortable for that, but it is a little easier.
Just wedge the throttle wide open and pull all the plugs.
Drain the float bowls on the carbs and disconnect the ignition (anywhere), so the coils arent attempting to fire.

Yes, and doable with kickstarter.
And 31k is barely broken in.
Would also check valve clearances. Might be the first time ever.
Good Fortune!
