KZ440 Clutch cable routing behind sidecover?
27 Mar 2006 09:19
Hi!
When replacing the clutch cable on my 1981 KZ440 LTD, I lost track of how the clutch cable attaches inside the case (behind the sprocket cover). It's obvious where the cable enters, and it's obvious how the cotter pin holds it into the clutch release lever. However, I cannot figure out how the spring attaches to the clutch cable. I assume the spring returns the mechanism after using the clutch lever, same as on my old XS650. But how does it attach? Does the cable go through the spring, and then the dust boot covers the spring? Because that's what the manual seems to suggest.
How is the clutch relase lever supposed to be oriented? does the arm point forward, up, down?
I'd really appreciate some pictures of this, or a play-by-play description if someone could give it to me. I've done lots of work on bikes before, but this is my first time really pulling this one apart, and I'd rather save time by asking someone who knows, than spend the rest of my week in my basement muttering grimly to myself.

IIRC, the arm points down. Sorry, that's about all I remember & my KZ440 belongs to someone else now.

Thanks... I did scour that site pretty thoroughly, but I'll go through it again. I do have the factory manual but it's not much help in this case....

Okay, here's a pic of my KZ440 A1 right after I snapped the chain:
The top of the picture is actually the bottom of the sprocket cover, & you can just make out how it's oriented. (Keeping in mind that it's upside down in the pic!)
