Dang! Burning oil! was created by polkat
In a recent post I asked what to do about an engine that smoked from running rich. The responses I got all suggested that it was oil burning. I was stubbron about this until finally today I pulled the plugs and inspected the piston tops with a peak light I made. Well, not only were the plugs all oily, but the piston tops and some intake valves I could see where oily too.

Okay, I was wrong and admit it. It's burning oil. I don't know if it's the valves or rings, or both yet. Now what to do about it? I can do the work no problem, but I live in a remote area with limited tools. So, can I pull the head and possibly the cylinders without removing the engine from the frame? If so, what do I do about the cam chain, etc?

Any advice will be most appreciated!

dont pull anything apart yet, double check your oil level and also do a compression and also a leak down test to verify where the problem is from. some of the symptoms you have described here and the carb thread would have me looking at a problem with the float valves in stead of a bad engine. if the oil level is too high or even if it'
s right pull the filler cap and give it a good smell it shouldn't smell like gas.

Oil doesn't smell like gas and the level is correct. The pugs and cylinders also smell like oil and not gas. I'll do a compression test tomorrow but don't have a leak down tester.

It's definitely oily versus carbon build up you're seeing?

"I don't know if it's the valves or rings,"... As mentioned, compression and leak down test will provide the answers.... For the most part anyways...

The reported oil condition might result from worn valve seals, which usually isn't a critical issue.

Good Luck! :)

just check everything over ahead of time as good as you can just to mabye keep you from tearing down a good running bike for no reason they aren't cheap to build. by the way leakdown testers are reasonably cheap. it could save you a whole pile of time and money and yes you can take the top end off in the frame.

I don't have a leak down tester as I said (and I'm poor). I have a manual if I can find it.

What is considered acceptable compression for this engine (KZ750H3)?

What! I believed in you man!

Oh well, can't be right all the time.

Heck maybe its just time for a teardown.

You can do all the top end real easy, with the engine in the bike.
Pull of valve cover.
Pull out cams.
Take off head.
Lift off block.
Inspect all clearances/bore dimensions/pistons.
Send head + new valve seals off to have valves reground/lapped, head freshened up.
Install new rings.
Drop block back on pistons.
Install new head gasket. Put new head on.
Install cams.
Check then get new shims / set valve lash.
Install valve cover.
Run it.
Retorque it
RIDE IT!

Only a few small easy steps are in between, but for the most part it's fairly straight forward!

Good luck man!

Did the compression test this morning. Worst was #1 which read 110lbs. The best was #4 which read 130lbs. The other two fell at about 120lbs.

Note: ALL cylinders came up about 20lbs. when I squirted some oil in the cylinders before taking a second reading. So, I think it's time for at least a top end rebuild. Anyone agree?
