i have a 1978 kz650 i bought at a rummage sale this summer for 50.00, the top end was off. the guy got all new pistons, had the cylinders honed and had the valves touched up but the machine shop lost his valve retainers, buckets, springs and keepers. i have a 1981 csr head, are they the same?

All the valve parts will be the same, but depending on what type of cam chain the 81 has/had will determine full compatibility. It was in the 81 motors that Kaw switched from the single link to the hyvo cam chains, some of the 81 bikes had the older single link style, some had the later hyvo style. The hyvo equipped motors won't have the machining for the cam chain rollers necessary for the single link chains.
