Recently bought an 80 KZ750. Came with a 4 into 1 exhaust. All the studs are on the head and in great shape but there are no mounting hardware with the parts box. I'm at a loss of how the manifold bolts to the head. There must be four holders missing but if those just slip over the exhaust pipe what holds it in when you tighten down the head nuts? I looked at an online fiche and saw what looks like a pressure collar of some sort but I have no idea if this would be the same set up for a 4:1 set up. If anyone had a photo or input it would be greatly appreciated.

Well, there are four collars and split retainers that you put on then tighten them up. I assume if there's nothing else with your exhaust then thats what you need to do.

Thats kind of what you're looking for. They're for a KZ1000 but you'll get the idea.

I've found that heavy grease will hold the exhaust gaskets(4)in the ports and masking tape will hold the split collars together while getting the clamps, and nuts lined up.

The grease and tape will smell for a while after engine start. but after a day or so, will not be noticeable.

I'd suggest re-checking the tightness of the exhaust clamps on the studs as the gaskets will squeeze a bit.

Be careful in tightning them as several people have over- torqued the nuts and broke the studs.

FYI: you'll need the half-moon exhaust collars from a KZ650 (70's model & maybe an 80 model). The KZ750-4 stock exhaust has flanges welded to the header tips & uses short collars. The KZ650s mentioned have flared tips & use longer collars. The exhaust holders from any 650 or 750-4 should work.

Should be able to put the exhaust flanges on the studs loosely with the nuts. Slide the exhaust thru the flanges and then just slide back one flange at a time and put the half collars on, then reinstall flange and go to next one.

A trick I learned right here on KZRiders that works real well is to slide the collars onto the pipes and use rubber bands to hold the split collars in place. Then stick the header onto the engine. And yeah, it stinks for a little while while the rubber bands burn. But it works great.
