Frankenbike has hollow cams was created by School Teacher
Well i bought a 76kz and was tearing it down as the thing is becoming a donor for parts and my first supprise was that i had honda pistons in it. i guess it made it like 1038? any way i was gonna ebay it and then found the cams that were in it. they are hollow, from what i gather they were off an 73ish bike? they are stock lift as far as i can tell the thought the grind looks slightly different(duration?). anyone know if the grind changed with the hollow cams vs solid? And also i have neve seen a pair on ebay do they break easy?

They came on 73 and early 74 Z1's. Kawasaki drilled all the way from end-to-end. Probably to reduce weight on the cam components.

I've never seen one break - although I'm sure they could if you dropped them...

We'll I'll be damned....

One would think of the applied [pressures & torques being applied to this shaft, the damn thing would just twist in a swirl with hard throttle/compressions/torque loads...

Learn something new everyday.... Thanks for sharing.

Wow - what a cool cam. I've never seen seen one before, but have heard rumors. I'd be curious to know the difference in temperature that this cam runs at compared to a solid unit. Can't be much different, but probably a little.

The torsion stress in a shaft increases linearly from zero at the centerline to the maximum at the surface. And this maximum decreases as you make the shaft larger. So, if you make the shaft a little larger and hollow, you can have it take the same torque loads and it'll be much lighter. Thats why a driveshaft in a truck has a large diameter and thin walls. You could do the same job with a solid shaft, but since the load at the center is close to zero, you have a lot of material that isn't being used to carry load, so it ends up weighing too much.

All the new sportbikes have hollow cams, with plugs.

Years ago (Why does it seem I start every post like that :P ), Yosh used those hollow cams modified by plugging the ends and drilling some holes in the bearing surfaces to get oil into the center, then had holes in the lobes to squirt oil directly on the bucket as the lobe came around.

Today, all of the modern sport bikes have hollow cams.
