trying to revive my totaled kz1000 was created by knibbeone
Hey there, i just came home to my totaled 82 KZ1000. Been fighting the insurance company for weeks to get it home. The left side cover that sticks out is ground off by the pavement. Did that cause me to lose my oil? Don't wanna try starting it until i find out. Thanks!

If it is cracked on ground down enough to make a hole it will leak.

Parts are going cheap on eBay and you can get a single gasket for it.

If you are worried that the oil has leaked out why not just check the oil level? If there is still the proper amount of oil in the cases then try to start it.

If it leaks when it is running then shut it down and find the leak.

bought it because I was told it would never run again...I like to prove people wrong.

color me paraniod, but, damage to stator cover also allows re-location of stator core/rotor clearances. I would, pull cover, check for contact (rotor to stator), disconnect plug wires, & witness rotor for true w/ starter motor. ( a wild assed quess is that more "pressed cranks" are damaged by impact to stators than any other. if "clean" do as you will, oil loss would be less of a concern to me than crank true, stator damage, floating bits, etc.G

I guess I don't get it. I am not familiar with the bigger engines.

Do the liter bikes run oil in the stator cover? I had not heard of a "wet" stator before.

I guess I thought they were like the 650's and the crank seals kept the oil in the cases.

the z1's,Kz900's,Kz1000's, and Kz1100's all had wet alternators, the oil also lubricated the over running starter clutches behind the alternator rotor.

These engines had low oil pressure(2.8-3.00 PSI) due to roller bearing crankshafts.

Well as everyone so far has stated, good advice... Open her up and truly visually confirm before even trying to start her....

"left side cover that sticks out is ground off by the pavement."... Pictures would definitely help so assumption is ground through the cover thus hole thus YUP, leak...

A bigger concern is that it may have ground into the stator windings thus shorted windings thus no good, no worky.... If indeed shorted windings then possibly damaged rectifier/regulator circuit due to short. Sorry, not trying to ruin your day further but these are likely possibilities you need to check/measure/confirm.

Visually inspect no doubt is in order... Electrical resistance, voltage and current measurements would be wise... ;)

No worries, these stators, rectifiers & regulators are available... Z1, APE, other KZ locations... Cases are available as well.... All can be repaired!

It would be a good idea to make sure the innards did not take the hit. My stator cover has very deep gouges from an accident where I T-boned a dumptruck in my youth. It is a trophy to me I just polish what I can and call it good. Keeping it on the bike reminds me how dangerous riding can be.
