Upon taking the head down to replace a gasket I noticed on the intake cam number 4 that the tappet was pitted pretty badly. Looking closer at the cam itself I noticed pitting on the surface and when I looked at the edges of the grind I could see where little pieces of it had broken off. I looked at all of the other edges and they seemed like they were machined clean on the edges but this particular lobe looked like they may have forgotten to get the rough edges off.
The cam was purchased from APE so Jay maybe you have some feedback as to why? I will post pics of the cam and tappet when I am able to upload some decent pics of problem. :(

Interesting... Here's why..

On my recent valve adjustments, found exhaust #1 would not hold to shim clearances during break in periods... Swap the shims and still would be under spec within 500 mile checks and measurements...

All of which led to "Ok, something just not right here"... Out with the tools for I had to know...

The image below shows pretty much the same as your describing where the cam bearings where pitted and the cam shaft under the bearings had worn down....

Head, off to Larry C for confirmations of possible damages to valves/seats ... New exhaust valves and OEM seals... Wet sand the bearings and shaft smooth, pre-lube, install & torque, re-shim ~ .15mm on exhaust, .10mm on intakes...

All better now, holding to spec after 500 miles on her ... Damn the man just does sweet ass work... Thanks Lar! ;) Not to mention no smoke, even at start up! :woohoo:

Here's my WebCam .365 camshafts... Only happened under #1 exhaust cam. The arrows depict where the cam bearing grooved into the shaft...

Had not seen this, but if you are talking about the outer edge of the lobe, it would not hurt to break the edge with a belt sander. A lot of builders do this on new cams.

What you are describing sounds like the lifter is not turning, I have seen this on automotive cams.
it could be as simple as a small burr in the bucket area, take a sharpe pen and mark the edge of the bucket and rotate the engine it should move, if not look into why

A picture is worth a thousand words. Jay I think you said it best. The edge of the cam lobes that were hanging over because of the casting didn't have anything behind them to support them so they broke off and molested the tappet and lobe.
These pictures are, perhaps, worth 200 words each as they are a bit blurry but camera phones go figure.

This probably is not a big deal but I am a fan of precision and all parts operating at 100% and totally dialed in to be happy.

So, Jay thanks. I think you hit it on the money. Kawbob that you now see the tappet you can see that it appears to be circulating judging by the pitting on it and Dave wow!, that looks like a groove but not one you feel like dancing to. :( I'll give you a call today to wish you a happy new year.

Good. At first I thought you might be having the same issue with them that others have had.... Bending the handlebars back

Just because others drop a load when they twist the throttle doesn't mean that the bikes are too fast just means that they need to stop putting armorall on their iron board seats and stop buying their bars from the bargain bin at Warshawsky's. :P
