I agree with Nebr_Rex...I also just set mine deeper for the dowel holes. As an aside, if you are replacing helicoils that pulled out, you'll have to use Big-serts instead of Time-serts. If the threads are stripped for the first time, then use Time-serts.

What he just said.

Helicoils are the work of the DEVIL and must NEVER be used on anything you own. Timeserts and Bigserts are the way to go!!!!!!!:woohoo:

If you cant fix it with a Hammer....... it's gotta be an Electrical problem...

If you measured the hole size at 7.0 mm, then it is too big for the 6X1.0 time-sert...next would then be the Big-sert...you need to buy the kit (which has the drill, countersink, tap, insert tool, and 5 Big-serts). However, you have to be careful with Big-serts as they are very difficult to remove (if you screw up) as they have a camlocking mechanism...whereas the Time-serts do not and can be removed with an easy-out (which almost never work either  by the way). It will take some planning and measuring to ensure that you are setting your inserts deep enough.

Note that the J motors are notorious for stripping cam cap bolts. Interestingly, we have been discussing this same issue on www.kz1000r.com and as was pointed out by a member (from the Z1 Owners Group (UK)) it is likely the cam cap torque specs for the J motors are incorrect in all the manuals. The torque specs are listed as 12 ftlbs...this exceeds the torque specs for a automotive-grade M6 bolt. The torque for a J motor cam cap bolt should be between 8 and 9.5 ftlbs...the UK folks have been doing this for quite some time and the cam cap stripping has more or less stopped.

Thanks after I stripped 2 holes I looked into the torque for
those bolt and found the same thing. I used 92in/lbs on the rest and had no more problems.
Again I appreciate your help.
Thanks

Hey buda, I tightened my J head cam cap bolts to 12 foot pounds and broke a bolt and stripped 2 holes about 2 weeks ago...just got my helicoil set in the mail today. I will be putting them in tonight. Somewhere on here I saw someone say that helicoils are fine, if they strip out then you can put in time serts, I figure start small, the helicoils cost very little, and if they don't work out then no hair off my back.

Just for the record, over the years I've personally done 50 or more helicoil repairs. everything from spark plugs to 6mm bolts to 1/2" bolts and let me count all these problems I've had----Zero
Maybe it's luck, maybe sometimes the helicoil is installed wrong sometimes, I don't know, but they work just fine. You'll never strip a helicoil as it's stainless steel. Also 12ft/lb is way too much for any 6mm bolt. I don't care what the manuals say, you'll strip them all at 12ft/lb. Isn't it like 5.5ft/lb on your basic 6mm bolt otherwise? I stay there and they will strip at 5.5 even sometimes. Oops I forget, don't use ft/lb, tighten to 66in/lb. Much better.:)

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.
