Used cylinder blocks and pistons...#4 BAD! was created by Duck
I just bought a set of first oversize pistons with rings for a stock 'J' block on ebay. Got the block too because it was a package deal. Pistons look good, and block still had hint of hone finish showing. Seller said it's all well within spec. $42 including ship. This is to replace the well worn set here.
I had been looking at big bore kits but almost all of the used ones seem to have damage to the #4 piston and bore. Is this a case of statistical bunching at the time I've been looking or is it common for #4 to sustain damage to skirts and bore?
The prices on these used packages seems high when one considers that one piston will need repair and one bore may need resleeve or oversize piston...

i wouldnt recomend running just 1 oversize piston, replacing a sleeve and installing another stock piston close to the same weight wouldnt be so bad. i picked up your rear brake caliper today, it turned out pretty nice.ill get it shipped tomorrow.i missed the part about first oversize on other pistons

That's a real good question, I can understand #2 or #3 having problems because they get less cooling from the airflow, but I wonder why #4 would have a problem?
Maybe APE Jay will enlighten us
(He probably sees enough of them to know whether or not it's a common problem).

If a bike is left sitting and on side stand and perhaps the carbs are left off, the #4 cylinder is most likely to pick up moisture or even fill with water. When you see beater bikes that have been sitting, the #4 will most generally have the rust ring problem in the #4 liner because I guess it is most exposed to the elements.
