Kz550 Transmision Problems??

Well im kinda new to motorcycles so don't be to mean LOL!
But i just picked up a 1980 Kz550 that im trying to get running. And while im waiting on parts i have been going over things and noticed that i cant get the trans to shift into second is this normal? does if have to be running to shift up? It will go into first and neutral just fine any ideas?

yes that is normal. the bike needs to be moving to make the shift to second. it's is called neutral finder and a nice feature.

Yep, for added reassurence.
Mine does it too.

If you put the bike on the center stand, place the bike in neutral and spin the tire backwards by hand you should be able to shift into second,third and so on if it would make you feel any better.

It may not prove anything but it will let you know what the shift drum feels like.

Best piece of advise: buy yourself a good repair manual. Not only is it a good read, you'l save yourself tons of money in the long run.

Valve lash inspections are considered regular maintenence on these old bikes...
