hello forum, sorry i havent been heard from in a while, i work weird hours and am usually too tired to get on teh computer for long enough t oleave a message. i now have the best of both worlds. a 2005 zzr600 and of course the two old z's. i am now reassembling the 76 with the 73 motor for now, and came across a garret m24 turbo. the engine already has oil lines to an oil cooler and i am pretty sure i can fab up an exhaust manifold, but i am not sure what i am going to do about the intake. i have seen turbos mounted in front of the motor and also in the typical spot underneith the seat. my question is on some of them the output from teh turbo (mainly the in front of the motor ones) goes to the back of the carbs but on most the turbo has a single large carb on it and a manifold from the turbo to the intake ports. can anybody tell me the advantages and disadvantages of either and if the garret m24 will work. also if anybody can tell me a basic of what i will need such as waste gate/blowoff (?)/ priority valve for either one it would be much appreciated. thanks, ryan.

I did delete the other post... Can't really help you as I don't do turbos... I know others here on the site know a bit about it so will allow them to chime in. I will send you an email address for a guy named Mad Mike. He is a turbo nut and occassionaly posts stuff here. Mike is my bud so drop him a note and tell him I sent you. He is big on theory stuff so should be able to point you in the right direction...

i was just thinking about your bike the other day!welcome back my 1428 has a draw-through set up with turbo and carb under seat,im still trying to decide what z1 is going to get im thinking blow -through mounted in front of motor just because i think it would look cool but it would be really easy just to yank turbo off of big bike and bolt it on since i allready have all the brackets and hardware.fastest z1 ,jeff at z1,and lorcan would probably be better at the tech end .goodluck, happy wrenching!

thats what i was thinking a blow through in front of the motor i like the way they look. the bike is coming out nicely, i welded in the brackets in the frame and just painted it a spotty/metallic like aluminium color. havent decided a final color for the tank/plastics yet. i'll have to send mike an email. thanks...

"M24" is cast into the compressor housing of lots of different Garretts so doesn't help in identifying the turbo at all. If you want to post some pics of it and don't mind taking some measurements then I can probably tell you what it is.

Covering every aspect of turbocharging and everything you will need to know to install a home built turbo setup is a bit outside the scope of a few forum replies IMO. A good place to start would be a book by Hugh MacInnes called (surprise) "Turbochargers". There are plenty of other turbo books out there but none as good as this one in my experience.
