hopefully this will be the end of problems... was created by cricketfire46
finally got my 83 kz750 LTD all taken apart and parts to fix it, just one last question... Got starter clutch out, had to drop oil pan though. The rollers are in great shape, the pins still look really good. The springs are shot though. Are these springs going to be a shop part, or can I run down to a lawnmower and small engine shop? local dealer wants like 30$ for a set of 3. I dont think a spring that small is worth that much... ideas? suggestions??

83 kz750 ltd, dyna coils, k&n, mac 4->1 just rolled 50k

If the springs you find are the same size and same rate they will be fine, if not than you will have problems.

peruse the redline cycle site...they have them and have a good write up about how to service starter clutches...

Your are right that $30 dollars seems too much for some small springs, but they have factored in the price all these;

-It will be difficult for you to figure out the rate and material.

-The labor involved if you guess wrong, would much more than $30, doing it again, even if you do it yourself. How much is your time worth?

-The US Dollar is worth less and less because we don't make anything anymore.

I would buy stock from on line distributors like Ron Ayers that usually sell for little less than dealers.

while you have it all apart check the sprag itself look for indentations or flat spotting that is normally the cause of failure in the first place with starter clutches it doesn't take much. so just a heads up before you put it all back together. the pins will flat spot but so wont the sprag.
