oil leak- shift shaft seal?

I have an oil leak where the shift shaft goes into the engine. If you look under the bike you see where the shaft goes into the engine and it leaks from roughly the top of that. Is this a seal that typically goes bad or something else you guys have heard about?

I got an oil seal kit for my 650 last winter and remember putting seals all over the engine cases and in the transmission cover I think. Damned if I can remember about the shifter though, sorry. The seal kits are fairly cheap though 20 to 40 bucks or something like that. I can't even look at the bike because it's tarped and snowed in.
